The name was originally a short form of any name ending in -dino. 

In English, the name is a slang for dinosaur and is often associated with the dog-like dinosaur character in The Flinstones.

The name has been borrowed into South Eastern Europe and as of 2009, it was the 34th most popular male name in Croatia and the 50th most popular in Bosnia & Herzegovina, (2010).

In the United States, many Italian immigrants who bore this name often anglicized it to Dean, as in the case of Dean Martin (1917-1995)

A feminine form is Dina.
