The name is Arabic for scented tree and is a common female name among Arabic-speakers. It is also the name of a town in the country of Djibouti, coincidentally it is also the name of a municipality in Valais Switzerland, however, the name of the Swiss town has no etymological relations to the Arabic feminine name. The name is borne by Lebanese Jazz singer Randa Ghossoub,  Arab-American writer, Randa Jarrar and author of Does My Head Look Big in This and Ten Things I Hate About Me, young adult author Randa Abdel-Fattah (b.1979).
