This word name has been in usage since at least the late 19th century and is derived from the Latin word, rubeus meaning, “red.” Ruby also makes the perfect name for a July baby as its the birthstone for that month.

For awhile, the name was considered rather old fashioned, however, within the last few years, the name has seen a revival, along with other vintagy choices such as Lily, Hazel and Olive.
